It’s hard to believe, but the first swim meet of the year is only a week and a half away! Yesterday you should have received an email from Active about how to sign up your swimmer (or decline if they are unable to attend) as attending meet one and enter them in events. If you are not sure which events your swimmer should try, you can declare them as attending and I can choose the events that they are ready for. Some swimmers may be scared by thinking about doing a meet, but this first one is a great time to try! We will be swimming at our pool and the team we are swimming against is a small team, so the sheer number of people will be less daunting than some of the other teams that we swim. The deadline to sign-up for this meet is Thursday, May 29 so there is still time to decide if they will be attending or not. On Tuesday a reminder will be sent to everyone who has not either signed up or declined the first meet to remind you to do so. If a swimmer has not either signed up or declined for the swim meet they will not be entered in the meet. This is to help our meet run smoothly and to ensure we’ve filled all of the lanes that we can during each race.
This week we’ve done a lot of organizing swimmers into lanes and talking about the basics of swim practice. With the novice swimmers that includes safety at swim practice, moving through things slowly so that all swimmers are safe and learning some basics of swim team. Intermediate swimmers have been reviewing or learning some basic drills that we will do all summer. Experienced swimmers have been reviewing drills and starting to build back some endurance.

Important Info!
- Parents are welcome to watch practices. We do ask that you refrain from coming to chat with your swimmer during practices. Often we are focusing on improving one single skill within a stroke and multiple sets of instructions during practice can confuse swimmers. If you have a question about what we are teaching and why, please ask. We also ask that you leave a few feet of deck space around the pool for the coaches to move around the deck to assist swimmers.
- It is recommended that swimmers wear some type of competition suit to practice. For boys, this means avoiding board shorts (or baggy style swim shorts), as they can make it hard to learn proper swim technique. For girls, this means one piece suits with no fancy extras (ruffles, beading, long sleeves, etc.) because these can add extra resistance which is not needed. Swim shirts are not recommended, as it can be hard to use correct technique with them on. Caps are optional for practice but are required at the swim meets.
- The first few weeks you may want to have sweatshirts or fleeces on hand after practices and evening meets, as it can get chilly more quickly than you’d think!
